GENERAL SUMMARY more...
Operates assigned radio frequencies of the
Harris County Sheriffs Department. Receives, processes
and disseminates information. Assigned general responsibility
for basic office operations. Exercises discretionary authority
with frequent supervision and instructions. Has frequent
access to confidential information.
II. DUTIES
AND RESPONSIBILITIES more...
A. Operates assigned radio frequencies, receiving
from and transmitting to authorized units.
B. Performs 9-1-1 duties: answers telephones,
transfers callers to appropriate locations, enters data
into the 9-1-1 computer system, monitors incoming calls
and sends hourly pages.
C. Performs Emergency Dispatch duties: answers
telephones, transfers callers to appropriate locations,
enters data into Computer Aided Dispatch (C.A.D.) system
and provides information.
D. Performs Texas Law Enforcement Telecommunications
System (T.L.E.T.S.) II system duties: receives, processes
and sends teletypes. Data entry into Texas Crime Information
Center/ National Crime Information Center (TCIC/NCIC).
E. Operates Text Telephone Device (T.D.D.)
(deaf phone).
F. Maintains appropriate records and files
pertaining to Emergency Dispatch Center Operations.
G. Complies with all Civil Service, Departmental,
Bureau and Division rules, regulations and standard operating
procedures.
H. Performs other assignments and duties as
required and/or necessary.
I. Reports to a designated supervisor.

QUALIFICATIONS more...
A. Entry level civilian Communications Officer
position filled in compliance with Departmental rules and
regulations concerning employment of communications officers.
B. Meets all standards for licensing as a
tele-communicator according to Texas Commission on Law Enforcement
Officer Standards and Education rules.
C. Complies with Texas Commission on Law Enforcement
Officer Standards and Education and Departmental rules and
regulations for continuing certification.
D. Passes all required entry level testing,
and exhibits no indication of current substance abuse.
E. Language skills so that written and oral
communications can be presented with adequate grammar, spelling,
punctuation and diction.
F. Successfully completes all required training.
IV. EFFORTS REQUIRED more...
A. Visual acuity to work with details, computer
terminals, extensive reading and prepares and analyzes data.
B. Physical activities include, but are not
limited to; standing, walking, finger dexterity, grasping,
feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive movements.
C. Able to operate various communications
equipment. Able to comprehend verbal, written and electronic
communications.
D. Able to articulate verbal, written and
electronic communications where others can comprehend.

WORKING CONDITIONS more...
A. Primarily located in a comfortable, inside
environment.
B. Exposure to potentially stressful and adverse
situations on a continuing basis. May be involved in situations
where exposure to communicable diseases could occur.
C. Physical activity is sedentary to light,
with mostly sitting and occasionally moving light weight
objects.
